SIFAX Group Spends N250m on CSR in 2021

SIFAX Group, a conglomerate with investment in Maritime, Aviation, Logistics, Oil & Gas, Financial Services and Hospitality, has spent over N250 million on corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes across Nigeria in 2021.

The company’s CSR is focused primarily on education, health, economic empowerment (youth and women) and the physically-challenged.

On education and health, hundreds of indigent students enjoyed full scholarship while equipment and facilities were donated to public educational and health institutions. Individuals with medical emergencies also received financial support.

Youth and women economic empowerment also took a large chunk of the budget with skill acquisition trainings organized for unemployed youths and women across the country. Business grants were also extended to those who completed the training programmes. Some targeted and disadvantaged poor households were also catered to as food items were donated to them on a monthly basis.

Various initiatives targeted at the physically-challenged children living with conditions like autism, down syndrome and the blind were also supported by the company in the course of the year.

Most of these projects were executed through its philanthropic arm, Ajoke Ayisat Afolabi Foundation (AAAF) which has offices in Lagos, Zaria and Umuahia.

Speaking on the 2021 CSR projects, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, Group Executive Vice Chairman, SIFAX Group, said one of the key pillars of the company’s business philosophy is to positively impact humanity and the society in any economy where the company carries out its operations.

According to him: “Right from the inception of our company in 1988, we have integrated social impact into our business strategy. Our businesses are not designed for profit making alone. We see ourselves as a platform that support social causes that provide access to opportunities, engender social stability and economic prosperity. We are motivated to do more when we see the physical impact of these CSR projects on the beneficiaries who today run into thousands.”

Foluke Ademokun, Executive Coordinator, AAAF, on her own part, noted that the beneficiaries of the various programmes are making a judicious use of the opportunities, adding that the Foundation seeks to partner with more sponsors, both domestic and international, as well as other stakeholders, in order to touch more lives.

After operating for a little over 15 months and following a growing customer base as well as increasing demand, SIFAX Shipping ICT Limited, a subsidiary of SIFAX Group and operator of the Ijora Inland Container Terminal, Lagos, has embarked on a massive expansion of the capacity of the terminal.

The terminal, commissioned in October 2020, was established to alleviate the difficulties experienced by various port users, including truckers, shipping lines, agents and consignees, in accessing the Apapa ports due to the congestion within that area that has defied all solutions. The terminal operates by moving consignments to its facility through barges for onward delivery to customers, thereby avoiding traffic congestion.

According to Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, Group Executive Vice Chairman, SIFAX Group, “It sounds so unbelievable that the off dock terminal is just one year old, going by the impact made in such a short period of time. Our stakeholders have been treated to a whole new experience in cargo clearance. Consignments are moved to the terminal through barges without the hassles of traffic congestion. Goods are cleared in record time while the location of the terminal makes it attractive for truckers. All these have increased our patronage and made the initial terminal capacity inadequate to satisfy the increasing demand.”

The terminal has consequently acquired adjoining properties to increase its total capacity from the 15,000 square meters at inception to 83,000 square meters. In order to ensure that the terminal operates in line with global standards in terms of infrastructure, the company has contracted China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) Nigeria Limited, a world-class construction company, for the construction of the terminal’s pavement.

Speaking at the contract signing ceremony in Lagos, Paul vd Linden, Managing Director, SIFAX Shipping ICT Limited, said the strategic nature of the terminal and the need to build a durable infrastructure at the facility necessitated the choice of CCECC.

According to Linden, “CCECC is a notable construction company with a track record of excellent service across the country. Having expanded the size of the terminal, we needed to put the terminal floor in a world-class state and that’s the reason CCECC was contracted. Due to the heavy-duty equipment that have been deployed, a super solid concrete surface that can withstand the pressure became necessary. We are excited with this agreement signed with CCECC and we are convinced they will deliver the project within the agreed.”

He further stated that some of the future plan of the terminal, which has been positioned as a model in terms of technology deployment, modern facilities, excellent customer service and infrastructural development, include the building of a strong quay in readiness to berth feeder vessels, as well as the purchase of more cargo handling equipment and a transit park for trucks using the facility.

Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, Group Executive Vice Chairman, SIFAX Group, has described the death of Olowu of Owu kingdom, Oba Adegboyega Dosunmu, Amororo II, as a great loss to the company and the nation.

The monarch, who died at the weekend, was the Board Chairman of SIFAX Group.

Afolabi said the company would miss the fatherly counsel of the monarch, who under his chairmanship, the company experienced phenomenal growth in various sectors like Maritime, Aviation, Oil & Gas, Logistics, Hospitality and Financial Services, among others.

He said: “Kabiyesi was not only a father to me, but also a source of inspiration for us as a company. Being the board chairman of a large corporation like ours comes with a huge responsibility but despite his age, we found his contribution and counsel very useful. His experience came handy either when expanding existing business or foraying into a new territory.

“He has left a leadership vacuum that would be difficult to fill for us as a company. His impact as an influential traditional ruler in the country would certainly be felt. I extend my condolences to his beloved family, the Owu kingdom and the people of Ogun state.”

Oba Dosunmu studied Drama and Television Production in 1963 at the Hendon College of Technology in London and also obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theology from the Landmark Baptist College Tennessee, USA in 1987.

The late monarch ascended the throne in 2005 after a sterling civil service career that included serving as the Head of Drama department at the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation. He was also the producer of the popular television series of the 1970s, Village Headmaster, which holds the record as Nigeria’s longest running television series. The TV programme was on air for over 20 years.

He joined partisan politics and was elected the Chairman of Abeokuta Local Government in 1976.

Seafarers tend to be lonely and be far away from relatives and loved ones for a long period of time. This loneliness and long period of absence, if not well managed, could be counterproductive and affect performance. We believe the wellbeing of the seafarers is the wellbeing of the maritime industry.

“We are happy your organisation’s several outreaches and other programmes have been able to bridge this gap and give the crew men a sense of belonging. This donation is to support the good work the organization is doing and to further empower for better result”.

He said: “The Mission to Seafarers is a non-governmental organisation with about 300-year-old history. Looking at the dangers and perils faced by seafarers globally, our aim is to promote their spiritual, moral and physical well-being and that of their families too irrespective of nationality, race, gender or creed. We have lacked vehicle to move us around and we thank SIFAX Group for heeding to our call through the donation of this bus. It will go a long way in helping us achieve our objectives.”

Sarumi further appealed to various stakeholders in the maritime industry and beyond to support the organization, especially in the provision of new infrastructure and facelift of the old ones.
